Job Summary

 

Improves K-12 English Language Arts (ELA) instruction of students with disabilities through professional development, coaching, and instructional support for teachers and school-based coaches.

 

Essential Functions

 

1. Develops and delivers professional development for teachers in ELA content and instructional strategies for the assigned grades, schools and/or content area.

2. Visits schools to observe the teaching/learning process, provide support and/or technical assistance as appropriate to promote student achievement.

3. Provides support to individual general and ESE teachers in curriculum implementation, ELA content, use of instructional materials and strategies, use of accommodations, accessibility features, and use of data to improve instruction by implementing coaching cycle (pre-conference, model, co-teach, observe, debrief).

4. Assists schools and ESE Instructional Program Support specialists with analysis of school, class, and student data, and develops appropriate instructional strategies.

5. Leads development and facilitation of professional learning communities.

6. Provides information and recommendations regarding instructional materials, equipment, and curriculum.

7. Conducts model ELA lessons, co-teaches, observes, and provides specific feedback to classroom teachers on instruction and/or management.

8. Provides guidance for the instruction of students with disabilities within Reading curriculum guides.

9. Develops and delivers professional development for teachers incorporating Universal Design for Learning (UDL), assistive technology, and accommodations to promote reading proficiency for students with disabilities.

10. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

 Qualifications

 

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree preferred

 

Experience:  Five (5) years of experience in exceptional student education.

 

Certifications & Licenses:  Florida Department of Education certification in at least one area of exceptional student education.  ELA certification and Reading certification or endorsement is preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

 

  • Working knowledge of DCPS exceptional student education policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of instructional design methodologies and behavioral interventions, including using a variety of teaching methods and positive behavior reinforcement appealing to different learners

  • Working knowledge of professional development methodologies using a variety of in-service programs

  • Ability to improve and develop curriculum materials

  • Ability to prepare reports
