Job Summary

 

Skilled craft work in the construction, alteration, repair and maintenance of buildings and fixtures. Performs rough and finished carpentry and skilled hand and bench carpentry including the operation of power-driven woodworking machinery.  This entry level class lies below that of Carpenter Lead Worker and/or Foreperson. 

 

Essential Functions

 

1. Performs general carpentry work in the alteration, repair, and maintenance of buildings, floors, stairways, partitions, doors and related wood fixtures.

2. Designs and builds bookcases, chests, lockers, cabinets, and shelves.

3. Performs skilled bench work in a carpenter shop operating power saws, joiners, wood lathes, planers, and boring, sanding and mortising machines.

4. Cleans, sharpens, and repairs hand and bench tools.

5. Repairs mechanical doors and locks.

6. Performs masonry, glazing, roofing, and sheet metal work including forming and pouring concrete.

7. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Probation: Six (6) months

 

Qualifications

 

Open Requirements:  Must have had at least four (4) years of experience in the carpentry trade. Time spent in approved apprenticeship programs may be accepted for the required experience on a year for year basis. Applicants who possess a journeyman’s certificate from a State approved apprenticeship program will have their names entered on the eligibility list without being required to take an assembled civil service examination.

Licensing:  A valid Florida Class D Driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
